Samuel Everitt Elementary School Discipline Code

Consequences listed in the Samuel Everitt Elementary School discipline code will be applied when the behaviors occur on school grounds or during school events such as class trips or PTO activities regardless of the time of day. 

MINOR BREACHES OF DISCIPLINE

A minor breach of discipline is conduct that impedes the orderly operation of the classroom and/or school.  While we label these behaviors as "minor", it is important for children and parents to understand that they often lead to bigger problems.  The examples listed below are not all-inclusive:
bullet

being tardy

bullet

refusal to follow classroom procedures establish by the teacher

bullet

running in the hall

bullet

food outside the cafeteria

bullet

out of assigned area without a pass

bullet

breach of dress code

bullet

possession of non-instructional items such as squirt guns, walkmans, mini-radios, game boy-type of products and cartridges, playback machines, and other electronic devises 

bullet

failure to cooperate with a guest or student teacher

Any staff member (certified or non-certified) who observes or who is supervising the student may initiate disciplinary action.  In cases of minor breaches of the discipline code, the following procedures will be followed and documented:

FIRST OFFENSE   The adult will talk with the student involved, establish an action plan, and/or use the following:

bullet

verbal reprimand

bullet

withdrawal of classroom privileges

bullet

develop a behavior contract

bullet

give specific assignments related to the nature of the offense

SECOND OFFENCE:    The adult will contact the parent in an effort to develop a home and school plan of action.

THIRD OFFENSE:    After the adult has followed the consequences listed for the first and second offense, he/she will refer the student to the administrator using a Discipline Tracking Card.  The administrator will:

meet with the student, investigate, and apply the discipline code

bullet

contact parents as soon as possible and discuss the disciplinary actions

bullet

record the results of the parent contact on the Disciplinary Tracking Card and return it to the staff member who wrote it and the homeroom teacher

SUBSEQUENT TRACKING CARDS FOR MINOR BREACHES OF DISCIPLINE:  the administrator has the right to apply more serious consequences as deemed appropriate.

DISCIPLINARY TRACKING CARD

The staff member who observes or who is supervising the student may initiate disciplinary action.  He/She will report the problem using a Disciplinary Tracking Card or a telephone and Disciplinary Tracking Card to the administrator as soon as possible.

FIRST DISCIPLINE TRACKING CARD:    The administrator will contact parents as soon as possible to arrange a conference or conference call that will include the administrator, staff member, and parent to devise a plan to work on the problem.  Depending upon the severity of the behavior, other consequences could include loss of classroom or school privileges, partial or full day in-school or out-of-school suspension.  A copy of the card will be returned to the staff member and the homeroom teacher.

SECOND DISCIPLINE TRACKING CARD:     The administrator will:

contact parents and inform them of the offense

bullet

arrange a definite conference date to meet with the parents as close as possible to the event

bullet

refer the student to the Guidance Counselor and/or the ASSIST Team depending upon the severity of the behavior,

bullet

other consequences could include loss of classroom or school privileges, partial or full day in-school or out-of-school suspension

bullet

record the results of the parent contact on the Disciplinary Tracking Card and return it to the staff members involved.

SUBSEQUENT TRACKING CARDS:    Offenses will result in progressive days of suspension.  The administrator will keep an accurate record of the offense and disciplinary consequences.  He/She has the right to apply more serious consequences as deemed appropriate.

information about a student's behavior or disciplinary consequences

are of a confidential nature and may be shared with his/her family only.
