Here is a web site you can use to find resources now and all summer long to help your child practice basic mathematical facts, explore new content, and enhance their teacher's instructions in a wide range of subjects and ...prepare them for the next school year.

Everitt has a FREE netTrekker account!  I want to let you know that the Pennsylvania Department of Education recently purchased a new product that's going to keep our students safe when they're using the Internet and will also help you find resources that match each of your children's learning needs.  The product, netTrekker d.i., is an award-winning search engine created just for students, teachers, and parents and delivers only safe, educator-selected websites every time the Internet is accessed.  Here are just a few reasons why netTrekker d.i. was chosen for our state's school community:

Searching is fast and easy: netTrekker d.i. contains over 180,000 educator-selected online resources that are organized around the K-12 curricula and by grade level so searching is logical and easy.
Makes searching the Internet safe for students:  All netTrekker d.i. websites and images have been selected and evaluated by educators so students receive ONLY safe, relevant results and school-friendly images every time they use the Internet.
Customized resources for English Language Learners:  netTrekker d.i. also includes an entire section devoted to ELL students and to teaching ESL.
A great resource for homework:  netTrekker is web-based so your child can use it at school and home.

Dear Parents:

Our school has chosen to use CompassLearningOdyssey, a web-based curriculum, to enhance your child's educational experience.  In order to proceed successfully with your home use, the workstation must be properly set up, including browser and plug-in installation.

This handout is designed to help you and your child get off to a good start by providing the necessary information to complete the workstation setup.  Online resources can by accessed from the home page at http://www.compasslearningodyssey.com.

WORKSTATION SETUP

To ensure that a workstation is properly configured to run the CompassLearningOdyssey program, you will need to verify that all minimum software requirements are met.  A requirements lists is available by selecting the System Requirements option from the CompassLearningOdyssey home page.

The System Check option provides assistance in this effort by checking the operating system, browser version, specific browser settings, and plug-ins.  Select the "Click her to check your system" option to start the system check.  You can easily see which requirements have not yet been met and access the appropriate web sites via the links provided.

Detailed information on browser settings can be found in the CompassLearningOdyssey Support section available on the CompassLearningOdyssey home page.

SUPPORT INFORMATION

Grade 5 Awards Information

At our grade five closing ceremony, many students are acknowledged for their academic achievements as  well as participation in our school wide activities.  Listed below is information about the criteria and history of some of those awards.

PRESIDENTIAL ACADEMIC AWARD

This highly distinguished award actually begins in grade four when students take the Iowa Test of Basic Skills.  The names of the students who score eighty-five percent (85%) or high on subtests are placed on a list.  Their academic progress is monitored in grade five.  If they earn special honors they qualify for the Presidential Award of Academic Excellence.  At the ceremonies in June, they receive special recognition along with a pin, a letter from the President of the United States, and a certificate.

Richard Kerns Memorial Award

Richard Kerns came to the Samuel Everitt Elementary School as a Crossing Guard in 1986.  For children who walked to school each day, he was the first "Everitt" person they saw in the morning and the last one in the afternoon.  Mr. Kerns always had a smile and a warm greeting for everyone.  He made boys and girls feel important.

Mr. Kerns commitment to the Samuel Everitt Family was rooted in his strong sense of duty and honor.  During World War II, Mr. Kerns served as a staff sergeant for the Army Air Corps, was stationed in Chinese Burma, and was the crew chief for a squadron of P-51 fighters.  As his ship was crossing the Indian Ocean, it was torpedoed.  He and other members of the crew were thrown into shark infested waters.  Mr. Kerns received the Purple Heart for his injuries.

When Mr. Kerns became ill after many years as our Crossing Guard, the Samuel Everitt Elementary School family surrounded him with cards, letters, visits and calls.  He knew that he played an important role at our school and looked forward to getting back to his post.  But sadly, was not meant to be.

After his death. the Richard Kerns Memorial Award was established as a way to recognize the qualities in one member of the Safety Patrol the ideals that Mr. Kerns thought were important: positive attitude, commitment to your job and a strong sense of community.
